Oh… here he goes again.Pat Robertson made more conversational remarks on The 700 Club program that were sexist in nature.
Robertson told viewers that women should fix themselves up in order to maintain their marriages.
Pat Robertson gave advice to a daughter asking for help. The 17-year-old daughter was looking for ideas to aid her parent’s marriage. Her father spent his time playing video games and her parent’s marriage was in danger. The talk show preacher turned the situation into blaming women for martial trouble.
Robertson said,
“A woman came to a preacher I know — it’s so funny… She was awful-looking. Her hair was all torn up, she was overweight and looked terrible, clothes bad and everything, and she said, “Oh Reverend, what can I do? My husband has started to drink. ‘And the preacher looked at her and he said: ‘Madam, if I were married to you, I’d start to drink too.'”
At about :58 seconds we find the conversation going down hill fast.
His female co-host gasped in shock at his comments and shook her head in disagreement.
Robertson went on to say that would should “fix [themselves] up, look pretty, look alert” in order to keep the attraction active from a husband. If that wasn’t enough, Robertson inserted his own information as he theorized about the 17-year-old’s mother:
“It may be your mom isn’t as sweet as you think she is, she may be kind of hard-nosed…”
As he ended his remarks, he proudly proclaimed that he “knows” what works after his 50+ years in marriage.
This isn’t the first time Robertson made headlines for ugly comments.
In 2001, he said that Haiti made a pact with the Devil and that homosexuality was a cause of 9/11. Last year, Robertson remarked on his program that if a spouse has Alzheimer’s it constitutes grounds for divorce because the evangelist said the disease is “a kind of death”.
This type of talk only alienates Christians from non-Christians. Robertson’s advice is a back eye upon Christian, which is already struggling with an image problem.

He’s… He’s a word I wouldn’t use on a Christian blog. That’s why.
Awesome piece. Pat Robertson gives Christianity a bad name. He’s popular, though. It’s great to see a pastor say something about it.
Chris, thanks for the restraint. I’m pretty open to free speech but there are few things that I wouldn’t approve of in the comments.
In honesty, I think he is trying to discuss the fact that men are more visual and in general prefer to have attractive wives. I am not trying to stereotype at all. In the media overload of beautiful images, a woman has a lot to compete with. It is not all the woman’s fault or responsibility, but it is helpful if a woman can keep her guy wanting to come home. My husband thanks me all the time for the way I take care of my appearance. He appreciates it. We have a successful marriage of over 20 years and we didn’t get there without hard work on both of our parts. But PR didn’t use much tact in what he said and unfortunately comes off like a kook.
IMO, it is interesting that how he added that without proof of it. He certainly could have given more pastoral advice.
Not surprised he would use this to make his point…thx for blogging about this…enjoyed your holy land posts…
Milton, sure. Glad you enjoyed the Israeli info. Thank you for keeping up.
Hello 🙂 I remember when Pat said these comments and I felt a little sick about them. Marriage in a biblical sense should be more than how a person looks or feels at any given moment in time. Pat was giving good advice in a very broad way. He failed to mention that how a husband treats a wife can determine how she reacts. If he constantly puts down her efforts she may, “give up” in a way both emotionally and physically. Unfortunately, there are so few Christian men that woman have had to take on both roles in society. An immature man/Christian would expect his wife to baby him, look pretty for him and only speak sweet words all the time. A mature man in Christ understands that woman gains weight in pregnancy, hair turns grey, skin gets older and wrinkled – sometimes people need surgery and that will leave scars. Just look at Pat, why isn’t he loosing weight, dying his hair and getting face lifts? It’s so obvious that physical beauty fades and that without Jesus Christ in the center of any relationship it won’t succeed. No matter how pretty/handsome you are on the outside. A mature man in Christ also realizes he is the key to making the relationship what he wants. Do you want your wife to treat you like a king? Agree to eat a healthy diet with her, exercise with her, treat your children like they are more important than you are. And you will see wonderful things happen! Defend who she is as a woman and she will defend who you are as a man.
The Haitian earthquake was a sad experience for the whole world not just the people who live there. I do believe that the whole world is experiencing the results of sinful behavior – so to pinpoint that one area of the world is wrong. There are probably more people in America that worship the works of Satan than in Haiti. America has more access to ridiculous behavior! At least now, all people of Christ that love him, will make their presence known by donating – time, money, prayers and all manner of support to all hurting people. And as far as homosexuality is concerned – it’s a sinful condition to be in – just like all sin – always remember, you must try to understand what led to the behavior before you can help someone break free of it. Sexual abuse is so horrendous that people behave in ways to try and work it out on their own – let’s help them through the process without judging so harshly.
