Time for a new adventure

I have some big news to share… well, it’s not “big” as in world changing, but big to me. After three years of searching, praying, and considering, I decided to go on a new adventure.

drum roll please

I’ve applied and was accepted into the Doctor of Theology program at La Salle University in Philadelphia, PA!

Since college, I’ve thought about a research degree in the field of theology. It was in college that I discovered that I love learning. I love the academic environment. I love the ability to learn and be shaped by an academic community. And, I’ve always had a love for people, ministry, and the church. Seminary was a time to combine both in graduate work and I want to continue to learn in both the academy and the church.

If you told me 15-20 years ago I’d publish a book and go on to study in doctoral work, I wouldn’t believe you. I did not start out as a great student in high school. As a matter of fact, I was an average B/B+ student. I was more interested in lacrosse and just having a good time with my friends. The first semester of undergrad was a wake up call.

So, what changes with this new adventure?

Nothing… major. I will still pastor at First Baptist Church of Ballston Spa. The Th.D. (similar to a Ph.D., but with a focus on theology) program at La Salle University is new and designed for working professionals to stay in their ministry/current profession and be a part-time student. Like some European models of doctoral work, this program features on-site class-time, but also is focused on independent study, cohort grouping, working with an advisor, examinations, and working towards a dissertation. (Though La Salle is a Catholic university, the school does not require students to be Catholic.) My studies will (hope to) focus on the historical and theological basis for church renewal. My church and ministry will benefit greatly from this new adventure.

I look forward to sharing my new adventure and journey with you in the coming months!
